My classes end up being heavy one week, light the next. This one is a heavy week. Thus I’ve been in full-force get-homework-done mode for the 3 classes I have at the end of this week. My current favorite is my Children’s Lit class by far - and I’ve been remembering some of my old fav’s from childhood. Our first assignment was to write text for a wordless picture book, and I wrote mine for Tuesday by David Wiesner (thanks, H.!). It’s roughly about some toads who, for the span of a night, fly around town on their lily pads. Awesome. I have this sudden desire to re-read every book I fell in love with as a child. Aren’t your childhood books the best?
It’s a great juxtaposition to what I’ve been doing at work. Take today, for example. I was looking up current figures for our federal spending, and ended up completely depressed. Check out the proposed budget for ‘08, from the good folks at the National Priorities Project. Yup - that’s about a 60/40 split between our military spending and EVERYTHING ELSE. In ‘04, we were at a 50/50 split. I wish I could make this up, folks. Makes me want to scream in the face of the next person who complains that welfare mothers are a drain on our economy.
Speaking of wishing I could just crawl into a hole, excuse me while I dive into reading Holes by Louis Sachar instead.
P.S. I reserve the right to use silly, far-reaching puns while immersed in children’s literature.

you’re welcome, a.! i knew you’d love that book. funny thing about rereading your favorite books as a child: it’s vaguely unsatisfying, but very worthwhile. xoxo
